CLASS OF 2009 SCOVELL SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS ANNOUNCED!

HONORING THE LEGACY OF FIELD AND MARY SCOVELL.

The Field and Mary Scovell Scholarship Foundation today announced the 15 recipients of $3,000 college grants that honor the memory of “Mr. Cotton Bowl” -- Field Scovell, and his wife of nearly 50 years, Mary. 

The 15 Scovell Scholarships totaling $45,000 will be awarded at a reception on May 11 at the Hyatt Regency Dallas. The total amount awarded matches last year’s giving record for the Foundation.

Scovell Scholarships are open to all North Texas high school graduates with strong leadership abilities, high moral character, demonstrated financial need and a connection to sports. 

Recipients must continue their education in the State of Texas or at a Big 12 or Southeastern Conference university – the two conferences associated with the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic.  Scovell grant recipients for 2009 include:

The following five named scholarships are presented to exemplary previous Scovell recipients currently enrolled in college:

 

E.E. “Buddy” Fogelson Award:

Colt Holbert, 20, is currently a sophomore at Mississippi State working toward a degree in Business Administration. He is an active volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, the Fisher House and the ALS Foundation. Holbert, a North Lamar High School graduate, holds a 3.21 GPA and is a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He is active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and works with local youth sports teams. This is the second consecutive year that Colt has received a Fogelson grant.

Catfish Montgomery Scholarship:

 

Zach Krimm, 22, is currently a junior at the University of Texas-Arlington. Zach, a Woodrow Wilson graduate, is an active volunteer at Lindsley Park Community School in Dallas as well as a volunteer with Boy Scout Troop 325. Even with a full school load, Zach works two jobs on the side. He is planning on graduating next year with a degree in Exercise and Sport Science. This is the third consecutive year Zach has received the Catfish Montgomery Scholarship and the fourth straight year to earn a Scovell grant.

Mary Dupree Scovell Scholarship:

 

Jeffri Malone, 20, is currently a junior at Howard Payne University in Brownwood. A graduate of Bonham High School, Jeffri is majoring in Spanish with a minor in Christian Studies and is on track to graduate in the spring of 2011. She is very active at school as the head cheerleader while being involved with her local church youth group. This past summer, she worked for the Christian Cheerleaders of America as a traveling staff member. Malone was the winner of the AT&T Scholarship in 2007.

Hunt Consolidated, Inc. Scholarship:

 

Joseph Richardson, 19, is currently a freshman at Louisiana State University. Joseph is involved on campus as an LSU Ambassador working with prospective students and currently serves on the LSU Leadership Council. During Hurricane Gustav, he volunteered to assist medical staff at the on-campus Pete Maravich Center. Joe, a Coppell High School graduate, is a Business Management major with a 4.0 GPA.

Ben E. Keith Company Scholarship:

 

Krystal Woods, 21, is a senior at Texas A&M University. Krystal is very active in the Bryan/College Station community, where she volunteers her time in the Bryan Independent School District as a tutor and a lunch buddy at a local elementary school. The Garland Naaman Forest graduate is also active in the Kappa Delta Sorority and the Bryan-College Station Girl Scouts. Krystal is majoring in Psychology and plans on becoming a teacher after graduation.

The following 10 scholarships are presented to exemplary high school graduates, including the following three named grants:


AT&T Award
:

Jesika Jones, 18, is graduating from Townview Law Magnet where she ranks second in her class. Jesika was selected as a first-team All-District athlete in volleyball. She was named captain for both the volleyball and track and field teams. Jones is active in the National Honor Society and the Student Advisory Council, where she serves as president of both organizations. Jesika will attend Texas A&M University.

 

Jack B. Prince Scholarship:

 

James Owen, 18, is graduating from Burleson High School where he lettered in football, baseball, basketball and track. James was a member of the Academic All District 3-5A team and a nominee for the All-State team. He is in the Top-10 percent of his graduating class and serves as president of the BHS men’s choir and is member of the Mayor’s Youth Council and the Spanish Club. James is very active in his church and has been accepted by both the University of Texas and Texas A&M University.

AT&T Cotton Bowl Scholarship:

Travis Plotkowski, 18, is graduating from the Calvary Academy in Fort Worth where he lettered in football and track. He was named first-team all-district in football and was selected to the Tom Hillary DFW All-Star Team as the starting center. He is active in the National Honor Society, the YMCA Youth and Government Program, yearbook staff and theater production. Travis plans to enroll in the honors program at Howard Payne University and will double major in History and Multi-Disciplinary Studies.

Additional Scovell Scholarship High School Recipients:

Temitope Ajannah, 17, is graduating from Cedar Hill High School where she is in the top 10 percent of her graduating class. Temitope was a member of the girls’ power lifting team, a member of the National Honor Society, the History Club, vice president of the Choir Council and active in her church. She plans to study law at the University of Houston.

James Briley, 18, is graduating from Skyline High School where he ranks 12th out of 945 students. He was a regional qualifier for the Cross Country team and also lettered in track. James is actively involved as the Parlimentarian of his school senate, a member of the Science Club, and the President of the Kudo’s of Phi Delta Kappa, a service organization. James plans to attend Baylor University.

Cristhian Escobar, 18, is graduating from Skyline High School where he ranks in the top-10 percent of his graduating class. Cristhian is a member of the National Honor Society and president of the tennis club. He is also a member of the chess club. Cristhian plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin in the fall.

Dominique James, 17, is graduating from the Richardson Communications Magnet where she holds a 3.7 GPA. She was named captain of the Varsity Cheerleaders, senior class treasurer and a section leader for her youth chorus. She is also a member of the Leslie K. Bedford Foundation. Dominique plans to attend Texas Tech University.

Alicia McClung, 18, is graduating from Seagoville High School where she ranks first in her class of 204. Alicia was a first-place winner at the regional Science Fair and received the Kathryn H. Priddy Young Scientist Award given by the UT Southwestern Medical Center. She served as freshman and junior class president and was president and drum major of the band. Alicia is a member of the National Honor Society and plans to attend Austin College in Sherman.

Gray Mowery, 18, is graduating from South Garland High School where he is ranked 10th out of 469 students. Ronald was an All-District Honorable Mention and a member of the National Honor Society.  He was a three-year participant in UIL Theater and was cast as “The Beast” in SGHS recent production of “Beauty and The Beast”. Gray will attend Tarleton State University, where he will play football.

Giao Nguyen, 18, is graduating from Richardson Berkner High School where she is ranked 4th out of 594 students. Giao is a member of the Berkner Association of Medical Students, National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. She is also a member of the Orchestra and participates on the tennis team. Giao plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin.

In addition to the $3,000 scholarship, each recipient will be recognized at the AT&T Cotton Bowl Big Play Luncheon on December 31st

Recipients also will ride on a float in the televised Jan. 1, 2010 Comerica Bank New Year’s Parade in Downtown Dallas. 

“We are honored to recognize these outstanding young leaders for their contributions to our community,” said Warren Gravely, chairman of the Scovell selection committee. “We are grateful for the record number of qualified applications and look forward to being able to provide additional scholarships in the future.”

The Scovell Scholarship Foundation has awarded more than $275,000 in scholarships to local students since the Foundation’s inception in 1991.

The Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) organization and is the official beneficiary of the CBAA and the Comerica Bank New Year’s Parade.  More than 99 percent of all contributions to the volunteer-led Foundation go directly to student scholarships. All contributions are tax deductible for Internal Revenue Service purposes.
