JANUARY 7th CONTEST AT COWBOYS STADIUM IS OFFICIALLY A SELLOUT.
ARLINGTON, Dec. 5th, 2010 – A Classic rivalry will be revived at the 75th AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic. Louisiana State University accepted an invitation from the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic to represent the Southeastern Conference (SEC) against Texas A&M from the Big 12. A crowd of over 80,000 is expected when LSU faces the Aggies in the 50th meeting of the two storied programs.
“This was one of those years where everything really fell into place,” Tommy Bain, Chairman of the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic said. “Once LSU accepted our invitation today, the Tigers took all the remaining tickets to make the 75th Classic a hard sellout. I can’t wait to see the atmosphere at Cowboys Stadium in primetime on January 7th.”
The 10th-ranked Tigers will face No. 18 Texas A&M for the first time since 1995. The rivalry dates back to 1899 when the Aggies posted a 52-0 victory in College Station. LSU owns the series lead, 26-20-3, but Texas A&M has won the last five. The two schools have met in a bowl game just once with LSU winning, 19-14, in the 1944 Orange Bowl.LSU’s last appearance in the AT&T Cotton Bowl came in 2003 following a 37-year absence from the Classic. The Tigers, led by Dallas Cowboys linebacker Bradie James, fell to the Texas Longhorns, 35-20. This will be LSU’s fifth trip to the Classic (2-1-1) and its 42nd overall bowl appearance.
The Aggies accepted the invitation to the Classic on Tuesday. They are making their 12th trip to the AT&T Cotton Bowl and first since 2005. Texas A&M defeated Auburn in the 50th Classic in 1986. The Aggies are 4-7-0 in the Classic and 13-18 in overall bowl appearances. LSU STATEMENTS: HEAD COACH LES MILES “The AT&T Cotton Bowl is one of the all-time great college bowl games and to be able to participate in what is the 75th anniversary of this legendary game will be special for our team. I’ve been here before as a head coach so I know firsthand what a first-class bowl this is. The hospitality is second to none and the atmosphere is no different than if you were playing in the national championship game. I’m excited and I know that our players are excited about this opportunity. Texas A&M has an outstanding program and we are looking forward to renewing our longstanding rivalry with them."
“We are very excited about going to Cowboys Stadium for the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic. Once it looked like we were out of the running for a BCS bowl game, we turned our attention to Dallas and getting into the Cotton Bowl. This is the bowl that our players and coaches wanted to play in. Dallas is a great city with a strong LSU following and to play in the 75th anniversary of the game will be something special. We have sold every ticket that we’ve been given so I know that our fans are excited about renewing our rivalry with Texas A&M in one of the great bowl games in college football.” HEAD COACH MIKE SHERMAN "Our football team is excited about going to the Cotton Bowl. The matchup with LSU presents a great challenge against a very talented and well-coached opponent. Our players are very aware of the Tigers' success and look forward to this game. What I recall from my previous trips to the Cotton Bowl is the outstanding hospitality. The bowl really does a great job of taking care of the players and makes the experience one to remember. Playing in the same stadium which will host the Super Bowl soon after our game allows our players to experience a unique national spotlight in one of the best venues in all of sports. As a team, we are honored to be selected to play in the historic 75th AT&T Cotton Bowl and look enthusiastically toward playing an old rival and a very good team in the LSU Tigers." DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS BILL BYRNE "We are very excited about playing in the 75th AT&T Cotton Bowl in Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. The bowl was founded on great hospitality and that continues today. We played in the 50th Cotton Bowl Classic and we have quite a history with LSU. You have two fan bases who are among the country's most supportive and passionate. We have played one of the toughest schedules in the country and it is appropriate we will face a great challenge from a quality LSU program. It should make for one of the best matchups in the bowl season."
