TEXAS POST-GAME NOTES

  • Lee Jackson gave Texas its first touchdown on a fumble return since Dakarai Pearson recovered a ball in the end zone against Baylor on Nov. 3, 2001 (17 games). It was the first touchdown return following a fumble in Classic history and second-longest return since Nebraska’s Steve Manstedt returned a Roosevelt Leaks fumble 65 yards in the 1974 Classic when the Huskers downed the Longhorns 19-3.
  • Texas recorded its eighth defensive/special teams score this season courtesy of Lee Jackson.
  • The Longhorns defense has posted an interception in 18 of its last 21 games.
  • After surrendering 310 yards on 47 plays (6.6 yards per play) in the first half the Texas defense buckled down and held the Tigers to 131 yards on 48 plays (2.7 yards per play) in the second half.
  • UT’s first two scoring drives covered a combined 154 yards in just six plays and took a total of 85 seconds. The first drive was two plays for 74 yards in 40 seconds, and the second four plays for 80 yards in 45 seconds. Each of UT’s three scoring drives took less than a minute with the fourth scoring march taking only two minutes. For the season, Texas needed less than 60 seconds on 16 of its 64 scoring drives this season.
  • Texas trailed 17-7 with 12 minutes remaining in the first half before rolling off 28 unanswered points.
  • Roy Williams and B.J. Johnson finished the season with a combined 113 catches for 1,745 yards. Their 1,745 yards are second all-time on the UT single-season receiving yardage for a duo chart and the 113 receptions are second on the UT single-season receptions for a duo chart.
  • Texas improved to 9-7-1 all-time against LSU.
  • Texas evened its all-time bowl record to 20-20-2 and improved to 11-10-1 in the Cotton Bowl.
  • Texas is 22-4 over the last two seasons. Only Miami (Fla.) has more victories over the last two years.
  • Today’s victory gave the Longhorns back-to-back 11-win seasons for the first time in school history. Texas was 11-2 a year ago.
  • UT has scored in a Big 12-record 265 consecutive games, the second-longest streak in the nation (BYU: 350). The Longhorns also have scored in 145 straight road games (including neutral-site contests).
    INDIVIDUAL NOTES
    Sophomore RB Cedric Benson
    Benson recorded a rushing TD in each of UT’s final six games in 14 of his past 17 games overall É Benson finished 46 yards on 11 carries to give him 1,293 rushing yards on the season, good for No. 6 in the UT single-season record book.
    Senior LB Lee Jackson
    Jackson scored his second career touchdown when he returned a Marcus Randall fumble 46 yards in the first quarter. It was his third career fumble recovery É his first TD came against Texas Tech in 1999 when he scored on an interception return É Jackson had his second fumble recovery in the third quarter when he picked up another Randall fumble É Jackson had three fumble recoveries this year and four in his career.
    Sophomore LB Derrick Johnson
    Johnson tied the UT single-season record for interceptions by a linebacker when he picked off Marcus Randall in the third quarter. It was his fourth interception of the season and second consecutive bowl game with a pick.
    Sophomore PK Dusty Mangum
    Mangum has connected on a UT-record 95 consecutive extra points É he kicked five extra points to increase his total 102 on the season, matching his 2001 total that places him eighth on the UT single-season scoring chart and fourth in the UT single-season kick-scoring chart.
    Senior DE Cory Redding -- SBC COTTON BOWL DEFENSIVE MVP
    Redding finished the season with at least one sack in eight straight games following his first-quarter takedown of Marcus Randall. Redding stripped Randall of the ball on the play for his fourth forced fumble of the season and seventh of his career É Redding’s 22 career sacks rank in a 10th-place tie on the UT all-time chart É Redding had four tackles for loss to give him 57 for his career (No. 2 UT all-time) and 24 on the season (No. 3 UT single-season).
    Senior QB Chris Simms
    Simms’ 51-yard TD pass to Roy Williams in the second quarter was his 29th TD accounted for on the season, breaking the prior mark of 28 he shared with Ricky Williams (1998) É Simms finished 15-of-28 for 269 yards and two TDs to mark his 18th career 200-yard game (eighth in 2002) and 18th multiple TD game (ninth in 2002) É Simms finished his career as the UT record holder for single-season TDs accounted for (30) and single-season TD passes (26). His 58 career TD passes and 26 career victories (T-No. 2 Marty Akins 1973-75) both rank second in the UT record book while his career pass attempts (911), pass completions (535), passing yards (7,097) and total offense (6,960) all rank fourth in the UT annals. Simms’ single-season totals of attempts (396), completions (239), yards (3,207) and total offense (3,038) all rank second in the UT single-season annals.
    Junior WR Roy Williams -- SBC COTTON BOWL OFFENSIVE MVP
    Williams extended his UT record to 34 games with a catch following his 51-yard score in the second quarter É it was the 27th TD reception of his career and 12th of the season, both UT records É Williams had a 75-yard reception late in the second quarter which equaled the second-longest reception in his career (96t vs. Oklahoma State, 2000; 75t vs. Texas A&M, 2002) É he finished with four receptions for 142 yards É Williams topped the 100-yard mark in the first half, giving him a UT-record five straight 100-yard performances É Williams has a UT-record 12 100-yard performances during his career, including six this season (t-No. 2 on UT single-season chart) É Williams is averaging 34.0 yards per TD reception for his career (27 for 918 yards) É Williams scored on a 39-yard reverse in the third quarter, marking his third career rushing TD. He’s averaging 38.0 yards per rushing TD (3 for 114 yards) É he finished the season with 64 receptions (No. 3 UT single-season) and 1,142 yards (No. 2 UT single-season) É for his career Williams has 171 receptions (No. 3 UT career) and 2,787 yards (No. 2 UT career).
    Freshman DT Rodrique Wright
    Wright recorded his second forced fumble of the season when he caused Marcus Randall to cough up the ball in the third quarter. He also forced a fumble at Kansas State.
